Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa (2013)

No gun in the first act remains unfired in the last.

Only God Forgives (2013)

Amazing photography and excellent performances combine with a subversive script to produce an intense, gripping film.

The World's End (2013)

The first two-thirds of the film are good with the right mix of comedy and arrested development. However the ending is overly dramatic and it has a serious of case endings without end.

Frances Ha (2012)

Beautiful photography but the script has a middle that drags and an ending that is too sudden.

The Bling Ring (2013)

It is hard to shake the sense of pop culture not so much devouring itself as turning into a supernova of self-reference before your eyes.

Apart from that though Sofia Coppola is definitely the director to visualise this world of meaningless decadence. There is some beautiful photography, strong performances and while the script gives in to a few formulaic cliches it is strong while holding back on the moralising.

Iron Man 3 (2013)

Great performances and the script simultaneously embraces and defies superhero cliches.

Blue Valentine (2010)

Interesting depictation of a marriage for the wrong reasons and the limits of romance. It takes a lot of suspended disbelief to make Ryan Gosling look likes he's gone to seed but credit to makeup department, they've done their best.

Not an easy screenplay to watch with few easy messages and very committed performances how ultimately it hides too much of the characters from us to draw any kind of deeper conclusion.

I Wish (2011)

This uplifting tale of magical realism underpins its whimsy with sadness. Very ordinary hopes, fears and dreams are turned into something special and defiant, an ode to human spirit.

Django Unchained (2012)

Another revenge fantasy from Tarantino with visual flair and sassy dialogue as standard. The script feels like two films in one sitting.

An interesting, visceral take on slavery that suitably remixes the tropes of the Western.
